National Army Museum and Royal Hospital Chelsea
Tuesday 20 March 2018

Our first visit of the day will be to the National Army Museum in Royal Hospital Road, Chelsea. The Museum reopened last year after undergoing major redevelopment. It brings together objects and stories about our relationship with the British Army and explores the Army as a cultural and military force of men and women that impacts on our customs, technologies and values. A new exhibition at the Museum entitled 'Special Forces - Out of the Shadows' which looks at the work of the six elite units, security and secrecy and the extreme skills and total dedication needed for their military operations.

We will then walk a short distance to the Royal Hospital where we have a light lunch at 12 noon in the cafe, before our tour of theRoyal Hospital starting at 1.30pm.  The Royal Hospital has been caring for army veterans for 325 years and we will discover the history behind the unique national institutioon on a guided walking tour, led by a resident Chelsea Pensioner.  We will see Sir Christopher Wren's stunning Buildings, hear some of the captivating stories of the inhabitants, past and present and learn about life today for the veterans of the Royal Hospital. The walking tour lasts 90 minutes and does include some steps. There will be time to see the Museum and Shop before being collected by Coach from the Royal Hospital for the return journey to Cuckfield.
